Despite numerous warnings in the book, I'm going to start with a good-sized, two-person garden. Four 4' x 4' blocks and four 1' x 4' trenches. The trenches will all hold vining plants, and two of the blocks will have vining plants on the northern edge.
So far, my plan looks like this:
This is just how I'll lay out the interior of the blocks - not the blocks themselves. That'll depend on where I decide is the best spot in the yard to put them.
Now I just need to choose varieties and then decide what stuff I want to plant from seed (and order them). I'm going to build at least one sun box, so I can grow some of my own transplants.
My favorite online seed catalog so far is Seed Savers, but they don't have a ton of variety in the regular catalog (without becoming a member of the exchange).
Holy cow, that's huge. You're going to be working in the garden all summer! I had some pests and diseases last year that took a lot of time (and emotional energy) to identify and treat. Maybe factor that in when you're thinking about the commitment. Though with so many plants, it won't be as heartbreaking if some fail.
ReplyDeleteHi, Anne! Keep in mind that each block is only 4' x 4'. It's pretty small, really. The book I read recommends this size (four blocks) for a generous harvest for two people. I added four trenches with trellises because so much of the stuff I want to grow is vining.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I'll have some trouble with pests and diseases, too. But working in the garden all summer - I plan to check on it/water/weed most every day - will help me catch that kind of thing early. I hope. :) And you're right - a few failures won't hurt so bad because I'll have lots of other plants.
